Newsletter 19:Where Are Stem Cells Found?

where are stem cells found

👶 Embryonic Stem Cells

These powerful cells come from embryos in the earliest stages of development. What makes them remarkable is their ability to become any type of cell in the body. As they mature, they begin to specialize, but their potential is unmatched at the start.

🤰Fetal Stem Cells

Fetal stem cells appear once the embryo matures into the fetal stage—usually around 9 weeks. Found in fetal tissues, blood, and bone marrow, these cells can develop into nearly any type of cell, supporting growth and development.

🧵 Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells

These stem cells are collected from the blood of the umbilical cord after birth. While more specialized than embryonic or fetal cells, they still have the ability to become specific types of cells and are often used in regenerative medicine.

🌸 Placental Stem Cells

Contained in the placenta after birth, these cells are similar to those in umbilical cord blood—but in much greater numbers. They’re already specialized for specific functions and offer great potential in therapeutic applications.

🧑‍⚕️ Adult Stem Cells

Found in infants, children, and adults, these stem cells are specific to certain tissues or organs—like the heart, brain, or skin. Their job? To maintain and repair the body’s tissues throughout life. Though more limited in scope, they are essential to long-term health.
